Summer Heights High
I meant to write something about this show earlier but every week I decided to put it off. I was waiting for a bad episode, a bad moment, anything to show that everyone involved in the production was human. None came.
This is probably the best comedy I have seen since the British Office. I find that what sets something like Summer Heights High or The Office apart from other comedies I enjoy is that they’re not afraid to blend some real emotion into the mix. One of the saddest peices of television I have ever seen is one in the final episode of The Office where David Brent begs not to be made redundant. It’s soul crushing. I got the same feeling while watching the scene in Summer Heights High where Jonah is dragged out of class. Granted, these sad bits lower the laugh count but I imagine in thirty years I won’t remember one frame of Borat (which made me laugh more than almost any other movie I’ve ever seen) while I’ll never forget that scene from The Office.
If you skipped Summer Heights High I urge you to watch it. And if you’ve never seen the British Office, get on that, too.
And if you want your day ruined, I present David Brent Is Made Redundant
